Spirited Kilkenny was Ireland’s capital in the Middle Ages and although many monuments remain from back then, it’s now best known for the 'craic'. Kilkenny cream ale flows in pubs forming part of its legendary nightlife and tours of Smithwick’s showcase Ireland’s oldest operating brewery, on grounds containing the St Francis Abbey ruins.
Kilkenny has the most medieval churches in Ireland. Dating to the 13th-century are the Black Abbey and St Canice’s Cathedral, next to the Round Tower - the only remains of a 9th-century monastery founded by the saint.
Medieval streets, inns and wall remnants still stand, but the most impressive attraction is Kilkenny Castle, in large gardens by the River Nore. The 3-turreted fortress was a former home of the once powerful Butler family.
The Parade leads from here past high street shops to The Tholsel – the porticoed town hall. The Elizabethan merchants’ residence Rothe House is in a similar style. Wandering the colourful streets you can’t fail to notice buildings named after cats, a reference to the residents’ dogged determination. Local hurling team The Cats play at Nowlan Park, and the city hosts the annual Cat Laughs comedy festival, amongst others.
Booking.com’s Kilkenny accommodation includes hotels with spas and pools, and city centre guest houses near the train station.

The imposing Norman castle complex which is 900+ years old is largely intact and well worth a visit even if you think you are not a 'history person'. Guided tour is worthwhile. Also visit the artists workshops in the stables complex opposite as well as adjacent park and gardens.
After the castle go to the related St. Canice's Cathedral. The streets between still have a historic character with old buildings and shop fronts and plenty of places to shop, eat and drink with a predominance of independent traders. Kilkenny is compact and easy to walk round but people with mobility difficulties should check as some parts are steep or served by steps. Kilkenny is close to the main motorway network and would make a good touring base.

We visited for a boys weekend away, 9 years after our last visit and it did not disappoint. So many great independent bars to work your way through, all in close proximity, most with an authentic Iriah feel to them. As usual, the Irish welcome is excellent with live music on tap too. Great place for a boozy weekend.

I like this tiny and warm, friendly city. During my stay there everything is amazing and interesting. Unfortunately there is no public transportation to Dunmore cave, otherwise I would like to visit there.

I loved this mediaeval city .bursting with history and street art , culture, and so many unique and quirky shops. I also love learning about history and loved how many different places I could see and learn about here. The highlights were the castle tour and the shennagins walking tour .

An old medieval town that is not overly touristed.
An old medieval town that is not overly touristed. Lots of lively pubs with friendly local people. I enjoy late night walks and this city seemed completely safe to enjoy at all hours. If you have a car the Rock of Cashel is about an hour away and well worth the trip.
Room was larger than expected. Location was fantastic right within walking distance of pubs, restaurants, shops etc.
Staff was helpful, bar staff were new and a little green but other than that all was well. Restaurant did not have much of a menu and food was okay would not be my first choice with the other options available in town.
Parking was a challenge the lot is behind a locked gate right next to the hotel and hard to spot if you are not familiar with the area.
Loved the fact that the hotel was right in town, close to everything, and with the hotel car park, I could leave the car parked and walk everywhere. I was very pleased with the vintage atmosphere and the quirkiness of the maze of halls and one or two steps up and down. Met some lovely people at the hotel bar. Decided to extend my stay another night and hotel staff was very accomidating. All in all, great place to spend time in Kilkenny!
Beautiful spacious room, tea and coffee machine available in the room, exceptional shower facilities, very clean, owner Liam was extremely helpful and lovely to deal with, property perfectly located (quiet location but close to city centre), excellent continental breakfast presented beautifully in a picnic basket - a very nice touch! Would certainly return for another stay.
Highly recommended 👌 👍
Superb location. Right in city centre but being being two storeys above a pedestrian street meant that it was very quiet with no traffic noise.
Within comfortable walking distance of main attractions.
Kilkenny is a compact and lively town to visit with a great selection of restaurants and bars.
Very responsive host with helpful advice on secure parking for the few days.
It is two star so was not expecting the Ritz - staff was lovely, they have a residence bar. Breakfast was good, room was clean. Good overall experience for just staying one night in Kilkenny, would probably choose a different hotel if staying longer than this. Location excellent, right in the city centre - few minutes walk from all bars and restaurants.
Staff very friendly including the man brendan at the reception he was very helpful nice spot for peace free WiFi and parking rooms were comfortable it's only a 10 minute walk to the city centre or 8 euro in a taxi myself and my partner had a lovely experience and we highly recommended here as its nice a cosy to get away
The food in the bar was really good. The staff very nice and attencious, very hard working even with the low staffing. The cocktails Cosmo and Strawberry Daiquiri is a must. It was our Anniversary and they really looked after us. Location only 5 min away from city centre. Bed very comfy.
Breakfast was good! We can tell the management’s effort by keeping up the hotel. Small personal touches such as bottled water and cookies, and we are happy to have wash cloths as we rarely find them in any hotels in UK and Ireland. The beddings and towels are clean and smells clean.
The hotel is a lovely central place to stay food and staff were excellent. Checkin was a little on the late side at 4pm. However checkout was at 12pm. Room was spacious and clean. All the staff were lovely apart from one male cleaning staff
Good location not too far from Kilkenny city centre. Excellent food for dinner in the bar and for breakfast. Nice big room with comfortable beds. Very helpful staff at reception and everywhere else in the house.
The room was very nicely decorated. Bed extremely comfortable. Very close to the city centre. Joanna was so helpful and answered any questions I had prior to my stay. Would recommend to family and friends.
The host was friendly and really welcoming! Communication was excellent and the breakfast was better than hotel standard. The location was amazing with great parking and access to the city centre
Beautiful hotel and accommodations. Large spacious rooms and baths. Staff extremely helpful and friendly. Our last few nights in Ireland and a wonderful way to end our trip.
Very clean and comfortable rooms. A very modern and well kept hotel. Excellent value. Located within an industrial park so lots of parking and close to the centre of town.
Room nice, breakfast decent but have had better at other 4 star hotels. Room service excellent. Best hotel we've stayed in so far in Kilkenny City Centre.
